Created in Canada in 1977 by Robert Gravel and Yvon Leduc, the Improvisational Theatre Match has since spread to numerous countries, becoming considered the most performed show in the world. It arrived in Italy in 1988 and has branched out into dozens of training and performance centers across the country, attracting thousands of practitioners at both professional and amateur levels. In a theatrical-sports setting, two teams of actor-players challenge each other, improvising on freshly drawn themes, under the guidance of a strict referee and with the active participation of the audience. The Match offers an extreme, playful, and completely unconventional form of theater, where collective creativity is celebrated and the actor simultaneously becomes the author and director. Improvisation is no longer simply a study or exploration, but a live performance where the audience witnesses the birth of the creative event. The book is intended as a theoretical and practical manual for both experienced practitioners of the game and beginners who want to try their hand at the art of live improvisation. In addition to the basic grammar of improvisation and the rules and strategies of the game, it offers an in-depth historical and theoretical reflection and a vast selection of exercises for training.
